Process Assassin

When an application crashes, hangs, or becomes unresponsive, the easiest way to shut it down is by terminating its process. You can very easily do this with the Software Dynamics-developed and appropriately named Process Assassin, an application that is offered for the great price of free.

You can use Process Assassin on a 32 or 64-bit Windows edition, anything from Windows XP onward. To get the application up and running, you will not have to go through an installation process. You’ll just have to download an archive, extract its contents, and then run the Process Assassin executable. Check out the Read Me txt if you need any help getting started with the application.

At the top of the application’s interface there’s a large Terminate button – click it and you will be presented with a dialog box that will allow you to locate and select the process you want to terminate. Or better yet, you could use the tabs that are displayed right underneath: Windows, Microsoft Office, Web Browsers, Other Applications, Process Monitor, Settings, Credits.

Let’s say that BitTorrent crashed for some reason. Click on the Other Applications tab and then select BitTorrent from the Internet Applications section. As you do so, Process Assassin will terminate BitTorrent’s process. If Google Chrome is hanging, click the Web Browsers tab and then select Google Chrome from the list – the browser’s process will then be terminated. And if you want to terminate Winamp, you can click the Process Monitor tab, select Winamp from the list, and then click on Assassinate Selected.

Process Assassin is a free application.
